I can’t claim to be a pizza expert (my favorite pizza, in general, is a simple ‘new york slice’) but we had some awesome pizza today at MamaPalma’s.A group of us Wharton students were starving after our ‘Night at the Philadelphia Art Museum’ so we cabbed over to MamaPalma’s on 23rd and Spruce. Even at 830 pm, the place was packed and we got the last table available.

the packed dining room
You can see the authentic brick oven right by the door when you walk in and smell the delicious Italian odors.
The four of us ordered a pesto salad and two medium pizzas. The salad was lettuce, tomatoes, roasted red peppers, olives and LOTS of feta cheese in a pesto vinaigrette. Delicious.
The pizza, however, is the reason to visit MamaPalma’s. We had a sausage-artichoke heart pizza which was just delicious, and then a ‘nonna’ pizza (doesn’t nonna mean grandmother in Italian? So is this a homestyle Italian favorite?) with eggplant, chicken, capers, and fresh mozzarella. Yum.
From l-r: nonna pizza, pesto salad, artichoke-sausage pizza

MP has beers on the menu and is possibly BYO for wine (not sure about that though). Service was not stellar (we had quite a wait before we could place our order, and we were quickly pushed out to allow the next table to sit), but given that it is just a casual pizza restaurant and a busy Friday night, you can’t be too picky.
